19 Nov 8 Ways to Winterize Your Skin

It’s that time of the year again, where we need to start thinking about preparing for winter.  Besides only worrying about our cars and our homes, we also need to worry about our skin.  Our skin goes through the harshest of conditions all day long, from getting in a hot shower every morning, to being nice and toasty indoors, then out in the bitter cold, and back inside again.  All day, everyday our skin wages in a winter weather battle and we need to arm ourselves with the knowledge to win.

One of the most important things to do is to put back into the skin what our environment is taking out: antioxidants, skin-repairing ingredients, and cell-communicating ingredients.

We also must stop doing things that damage our skin and further destroy its ability to be vibrant and radiant. These bad habits will only make seasonal dryness worse, resulting in itchy, dry, flaky, and uncomfortable skin.

Here’s what to do:

  • Avoid soap, use only gentle cleansers: Your skin loses about 25 percent of its ability to hold moisture in the winter months, and the stuff that kept you shine-free all summer will cause cracked dry skin during the winter. Use gentle cleansers that will not strip away your skin’s natural defense against dryness.  Ask us about Simply Clean and other gentle cleansers that will protect you from the coldest of conditions.
  • Wear sunscreen 365 days a year no matter how warm or cold, or whether the sun is shining or not: Sun-damaged skin has minimal ability to function normally so it can keep looking luminous and silken. The damage leads to a host of problems that keep your skin from looking its best. So wear sunscreen all the time, even if it’s not so hot outside, the UV rays will still get you.  We suggest using one of Oprah’s favorite things:  SkinCeutical’s Physical Fusion UV Defense Sunscreen, it’s great stuff!
  • Apply a well-formulated moisturizer: If you’re struggling with dryness, use a moisturizer that is stuffed with antioxidants to fight environmental damage. It should also contain ingredients that help keep water in skin, anti-inflammatory ingredients to reduce irritation, and cell-communicating ingredients to help skin produce normal skin cells.  We carry a great skin hydrator by SkinCeuticals called B5 Hydrating Gel that is perfect for this weather and all skin types.
  • Avoid soaking in the bathtub, Jacuzzi, or taking long showers: As wonderful as a hot shower feels when it’s cold outside, it may be too harsh for your skin. Over exposing your skin to hot water breaks down the substances that keep skin cells intact. Keep showers or baths short and turn down the water temperature during the cold months.
  • Apply an all over body moisturizer immediately after your shower/bath: The sooner you get a moisturizer on the better. It will help keep any moisture on the surface of skin from escaping into the environment.  We strongly recommend coconut oil.  The advantages of coconut oil could be attributable to its presence of caprylic acid, capric acid and lauric acid as well as its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and soothing properties.  It is a deep penetrating, deep moisturizing  plant oil.  It keeps the skin hydrated and lustrous all year long.  We carry Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Whipped Coconut Oil too!
  • Get a humidifier: With the heaters running 24/7, or warmth from a woodstove, low humidity is the cause of most weather-related dry skin, humidifiers are relatively inexpensive and can always be found at your local thrift shops. Get 2 or 3 of them if you have a large home to gain all the benefits.
  • Exfoliate: A well-formulated AHA or BHA exfoliant can help facilitate normal skin cell turnover and that makes the surface of skin and the lower layers behave beautifully as they should. Helping skin do what it should do year-round (turn over the top layer and replace it with newer, smoother cells that can better protect skin) is a great way to prevent dryness and dull skin. We carry Blemish + Age Defense.  It works wonders with the skin. The beta-hydroxy acid or BHA refines the pores and helps reduce acne while the Glycolic acid or AHA eliminates dead skin cell buildup and improves skin hydration.
  • Get a Chemical Peel: Gentle PCA facial treatments with the use of Sensi Peel Exfoliating Treatment, increases exfoliation as well as hydration. It also helps with rosacea and eczema flare ups that can be fierce this time of the year.  Winter months means less sun that actually speeds up healing time.  Tasneem is a certified PCA consultant that offer exclusive PCA Peels in our area.

16 Sep BB’s Summer Recap

Hi Everybody!  It’s Tasneem here and I just wanted to share with you all that we’ve been doing this summer to get things in gear for fall/winter!  This summer started off with our Summer Facial line, in which I incorporated our very own BB’s organic, cold pressed, coconut oil into my Signature facial and it was an instant success! All of our enchanting women that started using coconut oil in the beginning of the summer, just 3 short months ago, are now seeing a tremendous difference in overall skin condition and appearance, they are looking fabulously exotic and keep coming back for more coconut oil!  Some are using it in their hair, as well as slathering it on as an after bath all over body butter.

This summer has also been filled with the most beautiful brides that BB has ever had the privilege of preparing with facials, chemical peels and of course, threading.  We just posted pictures of those stunning brides in our blog last month, so don’t forget to check them out.  After our last  summer wedding, we whisked off on a quick end of the summer vacay to sunny Southern California, and had a fabulous time, then rushed back to start the season off with more training so that I can stay on top of my game and continue to offer all of you top-notch quality products, treatments, and services.

After successfully completing PCA’s intense coursework, I am ecstatic to announce that I am now an official PCA SKIN Consultant! So what does that mean?  It means I am trained and certified to give the finest, top of the line, chemical peels available in the Pacific Northwest.  PCA SKIN treatments and products are only available exclusively through licensed skin health professionals that have been trained and certified by PCA SKIN in their use.   So look no further, I am committed to give you my very best.

Reserve your spot, and call to set up an initial consultation/appointment.  I promise you the results are phenomenal, and you will not be disappointed.  Please watch out for our future blog explaining the benefits and advantages of PCA SKIN chemical peels.

24 Jun Threading Experience of a Young Client

The Brow Boutique encourages threading as an alternative to waxing for all ages.  Nicole, age 12, is one of our youngest clients and has written about her experiences with BB!

“Before I chose to do threading, I was very cautious about my eyebrows.  I would look at all the other girls’ eyebrows and saw they had thin and refined eyebrows.  I also got my upper lip threaded.  In fourth grade I noticed there was hair there, but in fifth grade, a classmate was persistent on telling me that I had hair on my upper lip.  After that I had realized that it was noticeable.  I asked my mom if I could do something but she told me that women would die for my eyebrows.  Soon my mom found that the Brow Boutique offered threading.  After I got threading done and I went to school a few people noticed there was something different about me but they couldn’t put their finger on it.  I was scared that threading would hurt, when really it’s not so bad after a while.  Threading gave me more self-confidence and I could look in the mirror and be happy with my appearance.”

For more information about the benefits of threading as opposed to waxing read our blog and follow us on twitter and facebook!

12 Jun The Coconut Oil Cleansing Method

So, have you ever heard of the dissolution Theory? The Oil Cleansing Method is based on the chemistry based principle that “like dissolves like”. To say it another way, “oil dissolves oil” so it’s pretty obvious that “water cannot dissolve oil”. This principle explains why many water based cleansers aren’t that effective when it comes to removing makeup or cleaning out pores.

This treatment is great to do at night, right before bedtime, and this deep cleanse should be done at least once a week. In the morning after performing this method, just do a quick wipe over with a warm washcloth, moisturize with Coconut oil, and you’re good to go. You never want to over cleanse your skin as this will serve only to irritate and cause more oil production. The objective of using this method is to deep clean while balancing your skin’s oil production at the same time.

Items you’ll need:

A soft washcloth, your Castor oil blend, and hot water. Or if you choose to steam your face, you’ll need either a facial steamer machine, or you may achieve the same affects by pouring hot water into a heat resistant bowl, and a towel to place over your head to trap the steam.

1. Pour 1 T of castor oil in a small bowl. Then add about 4 drops of your choice of moisturizing oils into the castor oil. Grapeseed oil is a sure bet, some people use Apricot and Rose Seed Oil to smooth out the fine lines, Avocado is great for restoring elasticity to the skin, and my all time favorite is Coconut Oil (It’s absolutely great for everything!), Or a combination of all or any. BB’s Whipped Coconut Body Butter is a perfect blend of coconut and avocado oil, making it ideal for the oil cleansing method.

2. Begin massaging the oil into your face. This will remove makeup, dirt, and other impurities, so there is no need to use a makeup remover or wash your face prior to the cleaning. Coconut oil also removes stubborn waterproof mascara and eyeliner, and Coconut oil can also be used as a make-up remover too, this stuff is amazing.

3. Using slow, firm motions across the skin, massage the oil deeply into your pores. Take your time and focus on your problem areas. Work the Castor/Coconut oil into your pores so that blackheads and the like can be dissolved and steamed away.

4. Relax, and give the oil enough time to work on dissolving and pulling out all of the impurities from your pores. Leave on your face a minimum of 15 minutes.

5. Pick up your washcloth and soak it in a bowl with the warm/hot water. You will want the water to be warm enough to open your pores and remove the dirt and oil. Cool water will not open your pores, nor will it remove the oil efficiently. Be very careful not to scald your skin, you are steaming your face to coax your pores to release the oils that are carrying the impurities. This is essentially the same process that your esthetician would use, but without the luxury of a steam machine. Lean your head back and place the warm wash cloth on top of your face. Allow it to stay until it cools. You will feel your pores releasing the impurities. Repeat this step 4 to 5 times rinsing the washcloth in between and getting it warm again, avoiding the urge to wipe the oil away. On your last steam, gently wipe the oils from your face. Avoid any temptation to scrub, as you’ll find it’s completely unnecessary and your skin will be soft, smooth, and free of dirt without the additional manual exfoliation and irritation that can result. Impurities, dead skin cells, and bacteria will be gently swept away.

The OCM method also works by steaming your face with hot water over a bowl.  Place your face over the bowl and put a towel you’re your head to trap in the steam. This method is extremely effective, and you can adjust the amount of heat on your face by moving close to, or away from, the bowl. Steam under the towel for about 15 minutes, and wipe your face clean with a warm wash cloth.

After the OCM, do an ice water rinse to close the pores, then spritz the face with your own organic blend of Chamomile and Green Tea toner (recipe below). Once the toner is absorbed, moisturize with Coconut Oil.

BB’s Summertime Facial Recipes:

OCM Coconut Facial Cleanser

1 T BB’s Castor Oil
5 drops BB’s Coconut Oil or ½ teaspoon BB’s Whipped Coconut Body Butter

Follow the directions mentioned above in the OCM blog.

Coconut Oil Facial Mask

1 tsp BB’s Coconut Oil or 1 tsp BB’s Whipped Coconut Body Butter
1 tsp Raw Honey

Mix well, and apply to your face. Let sit for 15 minutes, rinse with luke warm water, and moisturize with coconut oil.

Raw Honey Benefits:

         Acne and enlarged pores

Hyperpigmentation, sensitive, mature, and dull lifeless skin

Green Tea and Chamomile Spritzer

1 Organic Green Tea bag

1 Organic Chamomile Tea bag

3 drops of Pure Glycerin

1 cup of boiling water

Steep both bags in the cup of water. Let cool, add 3 drops of glycerin, and pour it into a spritzer. The natural antioxidants in tea, when applied topically to the skin, will help prevent and reverse troublesome skin conditions. The glycerin brings rapid hydration to your skin, while the chamomile soothes it. For added benefit, spritz a fine mist and allow to dry before applying your favorite sunscreen.

23 May Benefits of Castor Oil and Coconut Oil

Brow Boutique features two different types of oils created specifically for the health and wellbeing of your skin and hair.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is an all-skin problem remedy!  The Brow Boutique exclusively offers one of the purest forms of castor oil to be found in Portland.  Our 8oz bottle of Pure, Cold Pressed Castor Oil is 100% Organic and Hexane Free (no chemicals added).  These four qualities set our Castor Oil apart from bottles sold at other stores.  Through a process of using the cold-pressed method to extract oil from the organically grown castor beans, in addition to leaving them in their pure state without the addition of chemicals, the Cold Pressed Castor Oil from the Brow Boutique is a unique, healthy and wholesome solution for all of your skin needs.

Castor oil has so many benefits for skin and hair growth.  The main benefit that our clients receive from using our Castor Oil is that it promotes hair growth.  Massage a small drop of Castor oil into your brows before going to bed, and watch as your brows become healthier, fuller and stronger!

Coconut Oil

The Brow Boutique encourages the incorporation of coconut oil into the daily routine of any individual.  Our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is hexane free, cold-pressed and extracted from the meat of the coconut.  The 8oz bottle of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is used in various applications in the cosmetic and soaping industry.  Among other benefits, it is believed to promote skin elasticity and anti-aging, and it is known to be an effective moisturizer and softener for the skin.

Besides contributing to a faster metabolism, Dr. Oz states that, “Oxidation is considered a major contributor to cardiovascular problems and skin aging.  Coconut Oil can actually help our bodies reduce the need for antioxidant intake.”  Therefore, our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil applied directly to the skin has many benefits, including prolonged cell and tissue health in the body.  In addition, this oil acts as a moisturizer for both the skin and hair.  Full of vitamin E, the Organic Virgin Coconut Oil not only protects the skin by “reducing the absorption of toxins and pesticides through the skin” but moisturizes it as well.

21 Apr Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is one of the more recent skin-care techniques to have transitioned from Hollywood to mainstream.  It’s being termed as an “instant facelift” — an effective alternative to costlier and more invasive procedures like chemical peels and Botox.

So what exactly is microdermabrasion and how does it work?

The Basics

Microdermabrasion is a general term for the application of tiny rough grains to buff away the surface layer of skin. Many different products and treatments use this method, including over the counter creams and facial scrubs, salon treatments, and medical procedures.  It’s usually done to the face, chest, neck, arms or hands.

Your skin is made up of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the layer closest to the outside world. It’s a set of dead skin cells on top of another layer of cells that are in the process of maturing. The topmost layer is called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum mostly acts as a barrier between the outside world and the lower skin layers. It keeps all but the smallest molecules from getting through.

When you put lotions or creams on your skin, some of the moisture passes through the stratum corneum, but not all of it. This layer is home to many minor skin imperfections like fine wrinkle lines and blemishes.

The idea of this process is that if you remove or break up the stratum corneum, the body interprets that as a mild injury and rushes to replace the lost skin cells with new and healthy ones. In the first hour after treatment may cause mild redness or swelling.

This process has a few beneficial effects. With the stratum corneum gone, the skin’s surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin’s visible imperfections, like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines, are removed. Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin. As microdermabrasion temporarily removes some moisture from the skin, it is always followed by the application of moisturizing creams.

Some studies suggest that repeated microdermabrasion treatments at regular intervals may influence the way the lower layers of skin grow, as well as removing deeper blemishes over time. Some evidence seems to indicate that the rapid loss of skin moisture may be what triggers the lower skin layers to work overtime in speeding healthy cells up to the surface.

Types of  Microdermabrasion

Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment and rely on tiny crystals that are gently applied onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process.

Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without the need for crystals. The exfoliation process occurs when a diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin.

In both crystal and diamond microdermabrasion systems the dead skin cells are exfoliated and gently removed away from the face.

The tip passes over the skins surface, and creates a gentle vacuum.  The diamond tip gently exfoliates approximately 20-25 microns of dead skin cells of the outermost layer (stratum corneum). Once removed, it reveals one’s own fresher, younger looking skin beneath. One Microdermabrasion is equal to three 30% glycolic peels or one 70% peel.

The technician steadily moves the tool over the target area, applying even and steady pressure to remove the stratum corneum without affecting the lower skin layers. A standard session usually consists of one to three passes with the tool. In most cases, the patient is then asked to apply specialized lotions and creams to the affected area between sessions. This rehydrates the area and assists in promoting healthier new skin.

The Result

Microdermabrasion is a wonderful alternative to peels, laser, botox, or surgery as it is non-invasive and requires no down time after treatment. Normal activities may be resumed immediately. Your skin will have a radiant glow—free of irritation. Patients experience softer, smoother skin after the first treatment. A treatment series ranges from four to ten sessions depending on your skin type and condition.

A microdermabrasion treatment can be used to improve the skin on your face, neck, and hands. It is a rejuvenating treatment appropriate for:

  • Age Spots
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Oily skin
  • Minor to moderate early aging fine lines
  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Removes minor scars
